On April 24, 2024, Duke Energy released its 2023 Impact Report, its 18th annual accounting of its progress toward sustainable business goals for its more than 8 million customers.

According to the news release, over the past two years, Duke Energy has helped customers access nearly $377 million in financial support through a team of customer advocates, and smart, self-healing grid technologies helped customers avoid more than 1.5 million power outages. Despite that good news, in January of this year, North Carolina Duke Energy customers saw an increase in their residential electric bills, up about $10 per household per 1,000 kilowatt-hours. And additional increases are in place to take affect in January 2025 and January 2026.

Here in South Carolina, customers could see an increase of about $17 per month beginning in August if The Public Service Commission of South Carolina approves the company's rate hike request. Currently, customers can express their opinion concerning the matter via written submission or in-person at public hearings. The next hearing is scheduled in Columbia on May 20, 2024.
